The Kenwood TM-421E was launched in 1987 as the UHF counterpart to the 2m TM-221E. Due to regulatory constraints, the European E version was limited to 10 watts high / 1 watt low power, whereas the parallel TM-421A/ES variants delivered up to 35 watts. With ten memory channels, a built-in CTCSS encoder, and six selectable tuning steps, it offered considerably more operating convenience than its predecessors.
