Privacy policy

How TRXguide handles personal data.

This English version is provided for convenience only. In the event of any discrepancy, the German version shall prevail.

1. Controller

2. General

TRXguide is a community-maintained collection of radio equipment. You can read the whole site without disclosing anything about yourself — you only need an account if you want to contribute something yourself.

Personal data means any information by which a person can be identified. The sections below set out which data this is in detail and what it is used for.

3. Visiting the website (server logs)

When you open a page, your browser transmits technical data which the server logs temporarily:

  • IP address
  • date and time of the request
  • the address requested
  • the amount of data transferred and the status message
  • browser and operating system identifier (user agent)
  • where applicable, the previously visited page (referrer)

This data is technically necessary in order to deliver the page and serves operational security — for example to detect attacks and malfunctions. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure and trouble-free operation). The logs are deleted after seven days at the latest and are not combined with any other data.

4. Hosting

The website is hosted by:

The provider processes the data listed above on our behalf. A data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR is in place with them.

5. Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. This site sets strictly necessary cookies only:

  • Cookie -- Purpose -- Storage period
  • payload-token -- Keeps you signed in after logging in -- 30 days
  • NEXT_LOCALE -- Remembers your choice of language (German/English) -- until you close your browser

No consent is required for strictly necessary cookies (Section 25(2) TDDDG, the German telecommunications data protection act); the legal basis for the processing is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. In addition, Google Analytics sets cookies — but only once you have explicitly agreed in the consent banner (see section 7).

No cookies are set for advertising purposes.

6. No external content

This site embeds no content from third-party servers. There are no external fonts, no embedded videos and no map or social media services. Thumbnail images for linked YouTube videos are also delivered via our own server — your browser therefore makes no contact with Google, and your IP address never reaches them. Only when you click a video link do you leave this site, at which point the privacy terms of the provider concerned apply.

7. Audience measurement

This site uses Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. We use it to understand which content people look for and where the site still falls short — not for advertising. The measurement ID is G-7FCD5Q88Z5.

Only with your consent. On your first visit a banner asks whether you agree. No Google script is loaded before that. If you decline, or simply decide nothing, nothing happens: no script is loaded, no cookie is set and no connection to Google is made. The legal basis is your consent under Section 25(1) TDDDG and Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR.

What is processed: the pages you open and when, the page you came from, your approximate location (country and region level, derived from your IP address), details about your browser, operating system and screen size, and a random identifier that distinguishes your visit from others. Google Analytics 4 does not store your full IP address; it is used only for coarse location lookup and is truncated in the process.

Cookies: Google Analytics stores the identifiers _ga and _ga_<measurement id> in your browser. Their default lifetime is two years.

Transfer to the USA: Google may transfer data to its parent company Google LLC in the United States. Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission has confirmed an adequate level of data protection; the EU standard contractual clauses apply in addition. A residual risk remains: under certain conditions US authorities may access data.

Retention: Google automatically deletes event data — which pages were opened and when — after two months, and user-level data after 14 months. If you visit the site again, those 14 months start over. Aggregated reports, such as the number of page views per month, are unaffected; they do not allow conclusions about individuals.

Withdrawing consent: You can change your decision at any time via the "Cookie settings" link in the footer. Withdrawal takes effect immediately — the page reloads so that measurement really stops — and applies going forward; the lawfulness of processing carried out beforehand is unaffected. 8. Member account

For an account we process:

  • e-mail address — for logging in, for confirming the account and for notifications. It is not visible to other members.
  • display name — shown publicly alongside your contributions.
  • password — stored solely as a hash that cannot be reversed; we never know it in plain text.
  • acceptance of the Terms of Use, with a timestamp — as a record.
  • your notification settings and the number of your approved contributions (from which the badge next to your name is derived).

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the user relationship). After you register we send you a confirmation link; without confirmation the account is not activated.

Shared account with the ham radio trainer. The same account also gives you access to the ham radio exam trainer at trainer.trxguide.com — a second service run by the same operator on the same server. If you sign in here you are signed in there as well, and vice versa; technically the login cookie is valid for the whole trxguide.com domain. The trainer creates its own record holding your member ID, your email address and your display name, and stores your learning progress: the exam class you chose and which questions you answered how. The trainer returns no further data and passes none to third parties. As both services belong to the same controller this is not a transfer to a third party; the legal basis, as for the account itself, is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

What this means for signing out, password changes and deletion. Signing out on either site ends the session on the other. Changing your password ends all open sessions on both sites. And if you delete your account (see section 16), your trainer account and learning progress are deleted with it — if that fails, the deletion is aborted rather than carried out halfway.

9. Community contributions

When you write discussion posts, submit devices, upload photos, suggest videos or links, or submit text corrections, this content is stored together with your display name and a timestamp and — once reviewed — displayed publicly. It is thereby accessible worldwide and may be indexed by search engines.

Please do not publish anything in your contributions that you do not want to be public.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, and for the review prior to publication additionally Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a factual and lawful collection).

10. Star ratings

Ratings can be given without an account. We store the name you enter, your comment, the number of stars and the time. A rating only becomes publicly visible once we have reviewed it. In addition we store a cryptographic check value of your IP address (a salted hash), solely in order to limit how many ratings can be submitted from one connection per day. The IP address itself is not stored, and it cannot be reconstructed from the check value. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (protection against misuse).

11. Reporting function

If you report content, we store the reason given, your explanation, the reported content and — where provided — your contact e-mail address for follow-up questions. For technical problem reports made via the “Report a problem” page we additionally store the address of the affected page and your browser identifier — both help us reproduce the problem and say nothing about who you are. Here too a salted check value of the IP address is stored in order to prevent misuse of the reporting function (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

12. Protection against misuse

For registration, password resets and the translation function we limit the number of attempts per connection. For this purpose the IP address is likewise processed only as a salted check value and only briefly (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

13. Sending e-mail

For account confirmations, password resets and notifications we send e-mail via:

Your e-mail address and the content of the message are transmitted in the process. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

14. Translation function

Below discussion posts there is a button for translating. Only when you click it is the text of that post transmitted to DeepL SE, Maarweg 165, 50825 Cologne, Germany, and translated there. Nothing is transmitted without a click. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in cross-language comprehensibility). DeepL privacy notice: https://www.deepl.com/en/privacy

15. Storage periods

  • Account data: until you delete the account.
  • Deleted content: remains in a recycle bin for 30 days and is then permanently removed — this allows recovery in case of mistakes.
  • Contributions: remain in principle for as long as the collection exists.

16. Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself at any time: My account → Delete account. The account and the associated account data (e-mail address, display name, password hash, settings) are removed immediately and permanently — there is deliberately no recycle bin for this. Your account and learning progress at the ham radio trainer are deleted along with it (see section 8).

Your already published discussion posts remain in substance, but are anonymised: your display name is replaced by "Deleted member" and the link to your account is severed. The posts can no longer be attributed to any person afterwards.

The reason they remain: replies from other members are attached to your posts. If your posts disappeared, those replies would lose their context and entire discussions would be worthless to later readers. The legitimate interest in comprehensible discussions (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) prevails here, since after anonymisation there is no longer any reference to a person.

Please note: if someone has mentioned you by name within their own post ("@name"), we cannot alter that third-party text automatically. Please contact us in such a case and we will remove the mention.

17. Your rights

You are entitled at any time to:

  • access to the data stored about you (Art. 15 GDPR)
  • rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16 GDPR)
  • erasure (Art. 17 GDPR)
  • restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
  • data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)
  • object to processing based on a legitimate interest (Art. 21 GDPR)

A message to info@trxguide.com is sufficient.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The competent authority is the one for your place of residence or the one responsible for us:

18. Encryption

The site is transmitted exclusively in encrypted form (HTTPS). You can tell by the padlock symbol in your browser address bar.

As the site develops we will adapt this statement. The version published here at any given time applies.
